For eighteen years, I've lived in the City of Pontiac and watched it struggle to rebuild its deconstructed economy and shed its reputation as a hub for drugs and crime. Some of my earliest memories in the city are of community service, taking Saturday afternoons to paint over poor graffiti art and to mow wheat-length lawns. Through my involvement in community service, there were two things I noticed the city lacked: leadership opportunities for high school students and business investment in plethora of valuable assets in the city.
My junior year at the International Technology Academy in Pontiac, four friends and I decided to start a nonprofit that would meet those needs. The product of our efforts is the Leaders of the Future, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to transforming the City of Pontiac by the power of the organized youth. Three years and thousands of community service hours later, our team has grown to thirty active members and our goals have expanded. In 2016, we plan to partner with local corporations and churches to further our community service efforts and to transform the City of Pontiac into a hub for technology and skilled trades.
